E-Commerce in the OECD
Internet use has mushroomed in OECD countries in recent
years, but electronic commerce is still sleepily taking its
time to get off the blocks, the latest OECD Information
Technology Outlook shows. Consumers and businesses have so
far been slow to swap their shopping baskets for a keyboard
even in countries where Internet access is most widespread.
In countries that currently measure the value of Internet
sales, they accounted for just 0.4% to 1.8% of total sales
in 2000.

Texting the television
THERE was a time when any self-respecting television show,
particularly one aimed at a young audience, had to have an
e-mail address. But on Europe's TV screens, such addresses
are increasingly being pushed aside in favour of telephone
numbers to which viewers can send text messages from their
mobile phones. And no wonder: according to research about
to be published by Gartner, a consultancy, text messaging
has recently overtaken Internet use in Europe (see chart).
One of the fastest-growing uses of text messaging,
moreover, is interacting with television. Gartner's figures
show that 20% of teenagers in France, 11% in Britain and 9%
in Germany have sent messages in response to TV shows.

How to shut up your critics with a single word

"like a cancer – there are all sorts of solutions to
cancerous manifestations. For the time being, I am applying
chemotherapy."
