Internet overseer takes wrong path on accountability
In the age of the Enron and WorldCom scandals, it would be almost
unthinkable to try to impede board disclosure and transparency.
Almost. Last week, a court case involving the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) -- the Internet administrative
agency -- and Karl Auerbach, one of its most vocal directors,
revealed that ICANN attempted to do just that when it established an
unreasonable policy that placed conditions on board-of-director
access to its own corporate records.

DOES AMAZON.COM HOLD RIGHTS TO ANY DOMAIN WITH THE WORD AMAZON? (from
BNA Internet Law News)
In a split ICANN WIPO UDRP decision, a panel has transferred
amazonpic.com from a Korean company that operates under that name to
Amazon.com. The transfer occured despite evidence that Amazon.com is
not well-known in Korea and that Amazonpic.com holds a Korean
trademark in the name while Amazon.com does not. Notes the dissenting
panelist, "The majority decision has quite serious and negative
policy implications...[it] implies that no other entity could
register any domain name that includes amazon.com because it is a
trademark." Decision at:

South America's dominoes
With America’s treasury secretary, Paul O’Neill, in Brazil on the
first leg of a three-nation tour of Latin America, there are signs

Uribe's hour
BEHIND closed doors, with military aircraft patrolling the skies and
thousands of soldiers guarding the streets, Alvaro Uribe is due to be
sworn in as Colombia’s president on Wednesday August 7th. It will be
surprising if the inauguration passes without a guerrilla attack
somewhere in Colombia. For Mr Uribe has a clear mandate to improve
security, take the fight to Colombia’s rebel armies and reform the
country’s institutions. And all the signs are that in taking on one
of Latin America’s toughest jobs, he will plunge at once into some
bruising political battles.
