Education Secretary, Estelle Morris.
Opening the BETT 2002 educational technology conference in London,

ICANN pushes members-only domains
The president of the group that oversees the Internet's naming system
said Thursday that he favored creating new members-only suffixes,
such as .edu and .museum, over unrestricted domains such as .com,

Euro domain registries pushing ICANN for quality standards
European country code top-level domain (ccTLD) registries may stop
payments to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) if that governing body doesn't commit to a service agreement,
a representative of the organization of European registries said

SMS is text-spensive
Text messaging in Australia is now among the most expensive in the
world - and it's not likely to get any better.
This follows Optus's decision to match Telstra's recent Short Message
Service price rise. An Optus spokeswoman said it would lift its

Tech savvy Australians log on and connect
More than 80 million Internet users logged on for the first time.
Telephone traffic grew by 10 billion minutes, while tourists made 50
million more trips across international borders.
These are some of the findings of an annual globalisation survey by
consulting firm AT Kearney that found the value of world merchandise
tripled on 1999 levels. It ranks Australia as the second most
technology-savvy place on the planet.

Mobile users to get answer on cancer
Habitual, long-term mobile phone users could soon know if they risk
developing cancer.
In what is claimed to be a world-first study, which began yesterday
at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital, live human brain cells are being
used to test the long-term effects of mobile phone radiation.

Women log in to find nothing's changed
The Internet was once a virtual shed for geeky blokes but now looks
more like the real world - almost half the population is female and
over 70per cent of the grocery shopping is done by women.
Females now dominate many retail sites, real estate sites and some
travel sites and according to AC Nielsen/Consult, more young women
bank online than men of the same age.

Digital TV a turn-off for viewers
Fewer than 10,000 Australian households have made the switch to
digital television one year after its official launch, new industry
figures suggest.
With January 1 marking the first anniversary of regular digital
broadcasts by the main networks, one leading retailer last week said
sales of digital decoders were about 80 per cent below expectations.
