Russian's case shows severity of copyright law
On July 16, Dmitry Sklyarov, a Russian programmer, was arrested in
Las Vegas. Mr. Sklyarov, who is employed by a Moscow-based software
company called Elcomsoft, was charged with violating criminal
provisions contained in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a U.S.
copyright law statute. He is currently being held without bail and
faces a maximum penalty of a $500,000 (U.S.) fine and five years in
prison.
Mr. Sklyarov's alleged crime? He is the author of software that
breaks the encryption used by Adobe in its e-book program, converting
the encrypted text into the standard, easy-to-share PDF format.
