Web population boom to take region past US 
Internet users in Asia-Pacific are seen outnumbering those in the
United States in a scant four years, according to research 
group International Data Corp (IDC). 

Penetration in the region, excluding Japan, is expected to explode to
240 million online surfers by 2005 from 64 million in 2000, 
IDC said in a recent study.

Net cafe crackdown can't stop 'cyber opium' 
An official nationwide clean-up operation is underway in a bid to
counter the darker forces unleashed by the thriving 
cyber-cafes on the mainland. However, this fast growing business
shows no sign of abating. 

Among other measures, a freeze has been imposed on all new
applications for Internet cafes. Despite this, it has by-and-large 
been business as usual for the operators.

Interest in .hk domains to surge
The number of Web sites using the ".hk" suffix on their addresses is
expected to soar after next month's introduction of policies 
aimed at providing more naming flexibility, according to Hong Kong
Domain Name Registration (HKDNR) chief executive 
Francis Chin Yuk-lun.
