EC organising a workshop on safer use of new interactive technologies

For those interested in what different governments and organisations
are doing to develop a "safer" Internet, below is the latest workshop
being organised by the EC.

The European Commission is organising a workshop on safer use of new
interactive technologies in Luxembourg on  11 and 12 June.

The objective of the workshop is to produce a report which analyses
new means of content delivery from the angle of illegal and harmful
content/contact. The report should contain requirements and options
for future EU action.

 Main issues to be tackled: 
 
 *	examine core areas of concern of illegal content (not just child
pornography - e.g. racism) and illegal use of the Internet
 *	Relationship between law and technology (computer crime /
protection of minors / security / distribution of content)
 *	cross-media rating issues on existing technologies (digital
broadcasting, video games) 
 *	what will be the impact of new technologies, new forms of digital
content, new types of Internet use, new services (specially the
mobile Internet)? 
 *	needs of the new generations of Internet users, not only children,
but in all walks of life. 
 *	Extension to candidate countries
 The final report will be input into the policy discussion in the EU,
particularly regarding the follow-up to the Safer Internet Action
Plan.
 
 There will be a number of reports from distinguished specialists on
use of new technologies and a series of panel discussion - the
intention being that all participants should contribute to the
debate.
 
 This is a restricted meeting, by invitation only.  Participants will
be selected on the basis of expertise in the area, and to ensure a
balanced group from various professional backgrounds and
geographically covering the Member states, EEA-EFTA and candidate
countries. We are particularly keen to include participants from
Italy and Portugal.
