1st amendment, publishers & databases, spam & gambling
Hi all
What I call a very problematic use of the first amendment and free
speech is this case where the first amendment protected the
anti-abortionists who undoubtedly are responsible for the deaths of a
number of pro-abortion doctors.
Also stories on whether publishers must pay extra or get the
permission of freelance authors before putting their articles in
electronic databases and approval by the House Commerce Committee of
proposed anti-spam legislation.

ANTI-ABORTIONIST WEB SITE SAVED BY FIRST AMENDMENT
A federal appeals court threw out a $109 million verdict against
anti-abortion activists Wednesday. The court held that the First
Amendment protected a Web site operated by anti-abortionists, which
labelled abortion doctors as 'baby butchers' and criminals. The
court also unanimously concluded that the activists could be held
liable only if the material authorized or directly threatened
violence.

SUPREME COURT HEARS TASINI CASE
The US Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday in the Tasini case.
The judges will decide on whether publishers must pay extra or get
the permission of free-lance authors before putting their articles in
electronic databases. Several justices questioned arguments by the
New York Times and other publishers that an electronic article is
part of a revised version of a print publication, which would be
allow for publication without specific author permission.

HOUSE COMMERCE COMMITTEE VOTES TO CAN SPAM
The House Commerce Committee has unanimously approved proposed
anti-spam legislation. Under the act, Internet users and access
providers would be able to block spam by removing their names from
spammers' email lists. Penalties of $500 per message and a maximum
of $50,000 would be available if spammers violate the rules.
