[Apnic-announce] APNIC POPs and Root Server Trial
------------------------------------------------
As you may know, APNIC is working with ISC (the Internet Software
Consortium) to support the expansion of DNS root services in the Asia
Pacific region. New servers are being deployed within APNIC Points of
Presence as "BGP anycast" mirrors of the F-root server which is operated
by ISC.
Earlier this year, the APNIC Secretariat called for expressions of
interest in hosting and providing support to APNIC Points of Presence to
be established in the Asia-Pacific region. POP sites established under
this initiative will be used for APNIC DNS and whois services, and also
for F-root mirror servers.
Hong Kong Site Operational
--------------------------
The first APNIC root server site is now operational, within APNIC's POP
at HKIX in Hong Kong.
Depending on your local connectivity and topology, this server may be
visible to you and may therefore be providing root service to your
network (try "traceroute f.root-servers.net" to find out). Due to the
need for stability and load sharing between separate F-root servers,
visibility of this site may change from time to time, and from place to
place.
The HK rootserver location is supported by APNIC, HKIX, CUHK, Reach, and
France Telecom.
South Korea Site Announced
--------------------------
The next APNIC POP and root server installation will take place in
Seoul, Korea, during June 2003. The site in this case is being provided
and strongly supported by KRNIC, the Korea Network Information Centre,
which will provision Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to 2 major exchange
point locations in Seoul.
This installation will provide much-needed root DNS services within
South Korea, where penetration of broadband Internet services is among
the highest in the world. It will also provide additional security and
stability of root DNS services in the event of malicious or accidental
denial of service events affecting the DNS infrastructure.
